Twitter API whitelisting approval

September 8th, 2008

A week after applying to Twitter to add TwitterLeague to their whitelist it has been approved.

The problem that occurred with the login script was that it sends your username and password to Twitter to check them and then send us a true or false value back. Twitter only allows 100 of these requests per hour and TwitterLeague kept going over this limit.

Twitter API whitelisting alls you to make a lot more requests and this is what I was waiting on. So now all the follower counts will be updated every 60 minutes.

If you have any questions about this process please post a comment below.

Win a prize by becoming a fan of TwitterLeague on Facebook!

September 2nd, 2008

You can now become a fan of TwitterLeague by going to the Facebook page I have set up. I will probably be running a competition to get an initial set of fans. How about an advert for a month on TwitterLeague.com for a lucky person who signs up!

That’s right. When there are 100 fans of the TwitterLeague page I will pick a person at random and they will have a link on the front page of TwitterLeague to their blog/website or site of their choosing. So why not sign up and let your friends know about TwitterLeague. What have you got to lose?

Check out the Facebook page, become a fan and enjoy!

Traffic boost causing Twitter API problems

September 1st, 2008

This morning Mike Butcher wrote a great review of TwitterLeague on TechCrunch UK. Just 10 minutes after the article had gone live 20 people signed up. About 8 hours later the site experienced some problems when processing logins. This problem is caused by the Twitter API limit.

This is because whenever you login the site the application goes to Twitter and basically asks “are the username and password correct?”. The site the gets a response from the Twitter API of “true” or “false”. But when the API limit is reached there is no longer a true or false returned, jsut a line of text saying “The API limit has been reached” which means users cannot be authenticated and logged in.

I have applied for TwitterLeague to be whitelisted and so until then there will be login problems. :(

I really am as frustrated as you. I didn’t expect to reach the limit. It is just a painful wait until Twitter approve the app for whitelisting.

Thanks for hanging in there!

Go for launch!

August 29th, 2008

It is finally here. 7 days after I started this project, it is now time for launch. Obviously there will be the odd bug or two so please use the contact form to report these.

The site started off quite small but has grown in features to include ideas that only came into my head yesterday and the day before. Including the XML feed for each league.

The best thing to do is log in and check it out. As the site is in beta you do need an invite code so follow twitter.com/ollieparsley and you will probably get one.

Thanks

Ollie

So close to the beta launch

August 28th, 2008

That’s right. I have work tirelessly for days working on this. I wanted to get a web app done in less than a week by myself. I wanted to achieve a few goals in this development to help progress myself as a web developer.

The site is 99.99% completed on the development server. In the morning I will move it over to the live server, test it and then unleash it into the wild! Then that will officially be 7 days since I started the very first bit of development on the site.

There will of couse be a beta phase and this will require an invite code to enable you to login for the first time. These will be available in various places but the best bet is to follow twitter.com/ollieparsley as I will have one to give out tomorrow.

Thanks

Ollie

Making Fast Progress

August 27th, 2008

So I haven’t written a blog post in a few days as I have been programming and designing a lot. The main user interface is about 80% complete and the background processing is about there too. So in the last few days I have made some really fast progress.

I will be releasing some beta invite codes when the site in ready. I will be giving them out all over the place. But the best bet to getting an invite code is to follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/ollieparsley.

Thanks

Ollie

In the beginning…

August 25th, 2008

So I have written the first introductory post and now I am going to reveal a few more details about the site.

The site came about when I was rebuilding a web technology blog I run called TechJuicer. There are now a few more writers at TechJuicer, so I had the idea where I wanted to see a league of out Twitter followers. Each writer would appear in a table with their photo, their name and their Twitter follower count, this would be in the form of a league table. I then thought that there isn’t actually a website that has a tool to do this. I saw the opportunity to allow a large number of websites/companies/groups to create their own leagues and put it anywhere on their site.

So that is what TwitterLeague is. To put it simply. You sign in with your existing Twitter username, create a league, add twitter usernames to the league and then place some code onto your site.

That’s all there is to it. If you want to find out more information please e-mail info[at]twitterleague[dot]com

Thank you

Ollie

The first post

August 22nd, 2008

So it is tradition with sites I develop to write a post entitled “the first post”. Although I am sure that there are others out there that do the same.

Well the idea popped into my head a few days ago after looking at a site that does something with Twitter follower counts and widgets etc. That’s when the concept for TwitterLeague popped into my head.

To me I do my sites for me and then want other people to use it and see what they think.

At the moment all the domain names and subdomains are being activated, there is a MySql database ready for data to be input. I am pretty familiar with the Twitter API, which is key to this project.

Subscribe to the RSS feed for updates! There is also a Twitter account you can follow. Unfortunately Twitter doesn’t allow the word “twitter” in their usernames so I had to make the username “TwitLeague”.
